Crock pot Brat Recipe

Summertime means…….brats!!  At least where I live it does. Here’s a great way to get the grill flavor without standing over the grill for hours.

My family loves brats.  A standard meal for us in the summertime is grilled brats, hot dogs, and burgers – we don’t save that for 4th of July.  However, I have found that we end up eating hours after dinnertime if we grill them from the get-go.  I’ve tried boiling them first (which seriously stinks up and heats up my kitchen – two things I DON’T want).  I tried boiling them outside, but again you are waiting for them to boil (and simmer for hours if you really want that classic flavor), so I much prefer (what else?) using my crockpot.

The brats will be yummy and flavorful and take less time on the grill!  Paired with German Potato Salad and Baked Beans, and you have the classic summertime meal.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 6 hours

6 hours, 5 minutes

Yield: 10-12

My husband claims the cheaper the beer the better the taste. If you'd prefer to not use beer, use a combination of beef and/or veggie broth and water (the taste will change dramatically).

Ingredients

  • 1 large package brats (12 per package)
  • 3-4 cans beer
  • 1-2 onions, chopped
  • 6-8 cloves garlic, minced
  • brat buns and desired condiments to serve

Instructions

Place brats in slow cooker. Add beer (to cover), onions and garlic. Cover and cook on low 4-6 hours or high for 2-3 hours. (If needed, cook on simmer 8-10 hours.)

Remove from crockpot and grill, turning occasionally, for 10-15 minutes. Serve with buns and condiments such as mustard, ketchup, pickles, sauerkraut, etc.
